Passionists Pray

Monastery Mass

Lectionary/Holy Days Calendar

The Monastery has been a spiritual home for the New York City area from its founding in 1923. Since then, Passionist priests, brothers and lay associates have brought vision and help to people facing spiritual, emotional and material challenges.

The Passionists believe in the great miracle of God’s love found in the Passion, Death and Resurrection of Jesus Christ. Today the mission of the monastery continues as it is expressed in our motto: “May the Passion of Jesus Christ be always in our hearts”.

The Eucharist is “a memorial of His death and resurrection: a sacrament of love, a sign of unity, a bond of charity, a paschal banquet in which Christ is eaten, the mind is filled with grace, and a pledge of future glory is given to us.” (SL 47)

Vatican II called for an ongoing catechesis to help people participate in this mystery “not as strangers or silent spectators but, on the contrary, through a good understanding of the rites and prayers.”

Monastery Mass is a catechetical site offering short descriptions of the rites and prayers of the Mass. It concentrates on the liturgy of the word where the “treasures of the bible” are provided at the table of God’s Word.” (SL 51)

It offers short summaries of the Sunday, seasonal, and weekday readings as they occur in the calendar, short video homilies, and a 30-minute weekly panel discussion of the Sunday readings (4 panelists in an informal setting near Ambo in the Monastery Public Chapel.)  The panel format is designed to encourage ordinary people to discuss and reflect on the readings themselves.

It will also offer occasional online celebrations of the Eucharist, for example, for Passionist feasts and other celebrations.  The monastery chapel is a good visual location for online catechesis and celebrations.
